Five steps for increased economic equality

Published: May 2, 2022, 10:13 Updated: May 2, 2022, 1:16 p.m.In an international perspective, Sweden is at the forefront when it comes to economic equality. Despite this, women still generally own only half as much as men, earn less and receive a lower pension. Here, SEB’s experts suggest five steps for increased economic equality that benefit society as a whole.Read more about SEB’s initiative for increased economic equality Economic equality is one of the government’s gender equality policy sub-goals and means that men and women must have the same opportunities and conditions in terms of paid work that gives economic independence for life. It also includes entrepreneurship, that women should have the same opportunities as men to start and run companies that can grow and generate an income. – We are convinced that when men and women have the same opportunity to own, save, invest and run companies, the world will not only be fairer, it will also be more successful and sustainable, says SEB’s personal economist Américo Fernández. In addition to women today In general, only half own as much as men, earn less and receive a lower pension, they have more difficulty accessing financing when starting a business, and a woman is less likely to be considered as CEO or board member than a man.

Some examples:

• According to the think tank Ownershift, women today own only 32 percent of the privately owned shares, in terms of value. Women make up only 27 percent of the primary authorities among all companies in Sweden. • Women own only 15 percent of the land area in Sweden, compared to 39 percent for men. • Women also have an average of 10 percent lower salary than men, according to statistics from the Mediation Institute. Although development is moving in the right direction, it is slow. According to calculations from SEB’s private economists, with the pace of development of recent years, it will take a hundred years before we achieve equal pensions. But how do you do it practically to increase economic equality? Here are five steps you can take to begin the process of preparation for mediation.

Review part time

As part-time work is most common in women-dominated sectors, it is usually women who are disadvantaged when it comes to pensions. With SEB’s part-time spin, you can see how part-time affects the pension and calculate how much you need to save to compensate for part-time.

Increase ownership

Ownership gives freedom. Through conscious choices and new ways of thinking, we can create a more economically equal society where more women feel the freedom to own and to be able to buy a home, start investing or start a business.

Build a savings capital

Having access to a savings capital provides autonomy and security through life and an opportunity to leave bad relationships – everything from love relationships to relationships with employers. – Savings and investments are thus important from a gender equality perspective, says Emma Heikensten, senior sustainability specialist at SEB Investment Management.

Invest in gender equality funds

Today, there are a growing number of funds that invest in companies all over the world that work with gender issues and that have an attractive valuation in the market. An example is the new SEB Global Equal Opportunity Fund. The fund focuses on leading companies when it comes to gender equality work and inclusion.

Start your own

Only a third of Sweden’s entrepreneurs are women. SEB wants to promote female entrepreneurship through, for example, consulting. – There is a large, untapped potential for many exciting companies to grow. If more women start their own business, it will benefit both the Swedish economy and gender equality, at the same time as more new and sustainable ideas can become a reality, says Belgin Alalinli, responsible for entrepreneurs and startups, SEB.Read more about SEB’s initiative for increased economic equality
