Swedish mountains track new record season: “We are investing more than ever”

This is how the digital transition affects Sweden’s economy

It creates great value – both here at home and globally.Read more about Amazon Web ServicesThere are many advantages to Sweden as a center in the expansion of the cloud. In part, Sweden is a digitally mature country with a high level of expertise and some of the most successful digital service companies globally have their origins here. Sweden also has good physical and geographical conditions: a temperate climate, well-developed infrastructure, and great access to renewable energy – both through hydropower and the rapid expansion of wind and solar power. The central location in the Nordic region also means competitive advantages. If the Nordic countries were combined, they would be counted as the world’s 12th largest economy, at the same size level as Brazil, Canada or South Korea.

Investments of close to SEK 6 billion

Sweden is therefore important for the cloud, but the cloud is also important for Sweden. It shows not least the Unlocking Ambitions report, which was developed by the research institute Public First on behalf of Amazon Web Services (AWS). The report is based on interviews with business actors in all EU countries, including 500 Swedish companies. Unlocking Ambitions reviews how far different countries have come on the road to implementing the EU Commission’s vision of “The Digital Decade”, a collection of goals for digitization in the 2020s. If the goals are achieved before 2030, the report calculates that this corresponds to new values corresponding to SEK 338 million, just in Sweden. For the entire EU region, the sum of the potential value is a whopping 28 trillion kroner – more than five times Sweden’s GDP. But getting there also requires a willingness to invest, both from the public and the business community. In the years 2017-2020 alone, AWS invested over SEK 5.8 billion in the construction of a Swedish infrastructure region. Three large data centers, which the company calls availability zones, have been built in Västerås, Eskilstuna and Katrineholm and now form the basis for the company’s tens of thousands of customers in the Nordics. According to a report the company produced in November 2021, the investment had so far contributed SEK 3.6 billion in GDP growth in addition to the investment, and 1,145 jobs per year. During 2021-2022, the GDP addition for Sweden is expected to be another 2.2 billion.

Renewable energy the basis

Amazon is also the world’s largest private buyer of renewable energy and is involved in a number of wind and solar power projects in Sweden and globally. The first project, the wind farm in Bäckhammar in Värmland, has been supplying electricity to the AWS data center and the public electricity grid since September 2020. Through various initiatives, AWS also contributes to further strengthening Sweden’s IT competence. The global skills shortage in IT is a huge challenge for taking the next step in digitalisation. The effects are also felt in Sweden. Even before the pandemic accelerated digital development, it was estimated that there is a lack of more than 70,000 IT experts to cover the needs of society and business. Data protection is a central issue for Sweden and other EU countries to achieve the digitization goals.Read more about AWS Data Protection work here. The article is produced by Brand Studio in collaboration with AWS and not an article by Dagens industri
