Reliable and sustainable in the woods with Volvo Penta
Published: April 26, 2022, 09:00 Updated: April 29, 2022, 10:18Volvo Penta’s powertrains for forest machines are developed in close collaboration with customers. The result is engines that meet the toughest requirements, including operating time and load capacity. The company is now investing in electromobility, also in collaboration with customers. – We are proud that our motors work over a long period of time without planned stops. Our uptime in the forest is an important advantage for our customers, who often work very far from the nearest workshop. Many also work in difficult weather conditions and must trust that the machine starts without problems even if it is -30 in the morning, says Caroline Wingård, application engineer at Volvo Penta.Caroline Wingård’s work takes her all over Sweden, where she meets customers who use Volvo Pentas engines in their forestry machines. – Everyone has the same requirements for safe and reliable machines, which, for example, do not emit sparks, with high load-bearing capacity. The goal is to be able to cut as much as possible as quickly as possible, and then you are welcome to choose our engines both here in Sweden and the rest of the world.Participates in the development workVolvo Penta works closely with its OEM customers throughout the product life cycle, which also includes an understanding of the situation and requirements of foresters. – We often come in very early in the development process, sometimes already at the feasibility study. Say that the customer will produce a new generation of harvester – then we contribute with input on cabling, the space for the engine and so on up to and including the practical evaluations. It is a great confidence to work together in this way, which of course also contributes to our product development. Volvo Penta’s engines for off-road applications meet the emission requirements according to EU step 5. The company has long also worked with fuel consumption. – We have a very low fuel consumption, which of course means benefits for operational reliability, as well as economy and sustainability. For anyone who wants to be extra environmentally friendly, it is also possible to drive 100 percent on HVO100 renewable diesel.Electromobility in the forest With the ambition to continuously reduce carbon dioxide emissions and reach an emission-free company by 2050 in line with the scientific climate goals Science Based Targets to which the Volvo Group has committed itself, Volvo Penta has a strong focus on electromobility. – It is a complicated but very exciting area. One challenge is to get an overview of the large number of off-road applications that are affected. It is also important to develop solutions that combine electrification with the other benefits of our motors. We have a discussion with our forestry customers, where we look at different hybrid solutions, among other things. Another possible solution is fuel cells and the use of alternative fossil-free fuels, and there is a lot of expertise within the Volvo Group, says Caroline Wingård.Volvo Penta in brief
