ReTuna – a superstar in recycling

Published: September 13, 2022, 10:00 a.m. Updated: September 15, 2022, 1:59 p.m.For those of us who live in Eskilstuna, there are no strange things. We create new things and put our city on the map. Sweden’s first locomotive was built in Eskilstuna in the 1800s, Sweden’s biggest rock band Kent was raised here, and so we have created ReTuna – the world’s first recycling mall,” says Sofia Bystedt, center manager for the mall. Wear and tear is a bygone chapter. Now we know better – our gadgets must have a longer life. Building a recycling mall next to the recycling center, so that Eskilstuna residents can easily leave things they no longer want for recycling, is a smart effort for a more sustainable society. Despite that, ReTuna Återbruksgalleria is still unique in the world. Since the opening in August 2015, the mall has been visited by hundreds of thousands of shopping guests, thousands of people on study visits and reporters from all corners of the world. The guests meet both small entrepreneurs and world-leading companies such as IKEA. All with a common denominator: they want to drive circular development forward. – Living sustainably is not about living less – but about doing more with the resources we already have. Retuna is a wonderful excursion destination for the whole family, there is something for everyone here. We are an ordinary, but unusually sustainable shopping mall where guests can stay for a long time, says Sofia Bystedt, center manager for the mall. In ReTuna Återbruksgalleria, old things are used and given new life through repair and upcycling. Everything sold is reused, recycled, organic or sustainably produced. How is it that ReTuna Återbrukgalleria is located in Eskilstuna?– Behind ReTuna are many zealots within the municipal energy company Eskilstuna Energi och Miljö, Eskilstuna Municipality and Eskilstuna Folk High School. And, not to forget, local politicians who dared to believe and bet on the idea, says Sofia Bystedt. Here you will find the shopping of the future! Why has ReTuna had such a big impact? – We are still unique. Now we want to see more similar ventures! This is the trading place of the future where different players, big and small, known and unknown, can test their circular business ideas. We can learn a lot from each other – and thus speed up the transition to a circular and sustainable society. Nobody has time to run their own race in this important issue. The Guardian and Japanese television are some of the curious people who have been there. Now the goal is to increase awareness of ReTuna Återbruksgalleria at home as well. – We are already “Big in Japan”. The next step is to become the obvious shopping choice for Eskilstuna residents and other Sörmlanders. To shop here is to contribute to a circular economy in practice. That’s how ReTuna works● The mall is located next to the Retuna Recycling Center in Eskilstuna. It is easy for visitors to sort materials in the containers and then take the opportunity to leave reusable toys, furniture, clothes, interior items and technology in the mall’s “Return” depot. ● Here the material is received by staff who do an initial thinning. ● The stores then choose what they want to upcycle and sell to their customers.
