Her Majesty the Queen, my beloved mother, was an inspiration and a role model to me and everyone in my family, the king began softly in the speech broadcast in Britain, in many Commonwealth countries and around the world.”Queen Elizabeth’s life was a life well lived.” It was the first time Charles had spoken publicly since the news of Queen Elizabeth’s death on Thursday evening. The pre-recorded speech, traditional broadcast by the public service company BBC, was held at 19:00 on Friday. The king’s words of remembrance were framed by a memorial service in St. Paul’s Cathedral in central London, before a packed congregation of people who in some way represented all the residents the king will now serve. The service ended with “God save the king” being sung for the first time in a long time in public.King Charles sat at a desk, wearing a black suit and black tie, with Elizabeth’s portrait in a black frame next to him. In the picture, she wore a colorful turquoise outfit and a hat with a red flower. King Charles then referred to a defining moment in Queen Elizabeth’s life, when she was forced to take over from her father, King George VI, when he died in 1952. It was about a speech his mother gave from South Africa: “In 1947, on her 21st birthday , she promised the Commonwealth of Nations in a radio broadcast from Cape Town that she would devote her life – however short or long – to serving her people.” “It was more than a commitment, it was a deeply personal promise that came to characterize her entire life , the king continued in the low-key speech.”King Charles III continued to read his words of remembrance: “When the Queen ascended the throne, Britain and the world were still living with the aftermath of the Second World War and in the wake of old times. Over the past 70 years, we have seen our society change to become one with many cultures and faiths.”The king then confessed to the Church of England, “the church in which my faith is so deeply rooted”, and as a British monarch must do. Then King Charles spoke about some practical details, where he thanked his wife Camilla of 17 years for all the support. His eldest son William, now heir to the throne, gets a new title: “Today he becomes the Prince of Wales, a title that I have been proud to wear for a large part of my life.”He also sent his best wishes to son Harry and his wife Meghan, something seen as significant as the son’s relationship with the rest of the royal family has been strained. “I want to express my love for them, when I wish them good luck as they build a new life on the other side of the Atlantic.” But King Charles concluded with a personal reflection: “To my beloved mother, as you embark on your last journey to my dear father, I just want to say: thank you. And let hovering angels sing you to rest.”
