Sweden can show the world the way to sustainable food production

Published: March 29, 2022, 9:00 AM Updated: April 7, 2022, 10:58 AMBjörn Hellman, CEO of LivsmedelsföretagenIn 2050, the UN estimates that the world’s population will amount to 10 billion. In order for everyone to have access to high-quality food without destroying the environment and climate, global food production must be sustainable. The Swedish food industry can show the way, writes Livsmedelsföretagen’s CEO Björn Hellman. Today, global production and consumption of food accounts for a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions. Half of the world’s habitable area is used for cultivation and globally around 70 percent of all fresh water is used to cultivate and produce food. At the same time, we are in the middle of strong population growth. In less than 30 years, according to the UN, there will be 2,000 million more mouths to feed. The food must also be nutritious, safe and secure to eat. Large parts of the world’s population today lack access to food that they can give their children without having to worry. The environmental impact of food production and population growth together constitute one of the fateful issues of our time. The Swedish food industry does not have all the answers. But we think we have some. Our companies are world leaders in sustainability and many of our methods and technologies can be copied by others. But we also have a lot left to do at home. The pace of change must increase and for that the industry needs the right conditions. Here are four measures that can accelerate the Swedish transition: 1. Increase the profitability of farmers and food producersSwedish farmers and food producers are experiencing the sharpest cost increases in almost 20 years on raw materials, fuel, electricity, transport and packaging materials. If costs are not distributed more evenly across all links in the food chain, important investments in sustainability risk being pushed aside. Invest in food research and innovationWith increased government investments in research together with the companies’ own R & D we will be able to develop new sustainable production methods that increase the pace of change.Increase access to competent staffThe transition to sustainable production presupposes more automation, new process technologies and product innovations. This type of high technology requires trained personnel. Today, there are far too few training places in food technology and development. 4. Secure the electricity supply throughout the countryToday, there are significant shortcomings in the Swedish electricity supply. The availability of cheap electricity is crucial for the transition and the industry’s goal of being fossil-free by 2030. We are already investing large resources in electrifying our transports and factories, but if we are to take it all the way, we must have a robust electricity system that can deliver regardless of weather and wind. These are major actions that will require a lot of resources, planning and cooperation. That is why we are proposing that future governments appoint a dedicated food minister who can pursue these issues vigorously. The Swedish food industry shows that the transition is possible. Now we need the right conditions so that we can increase the pace. If we get it, Sweden can be the first in the world with a completely sustainable production of food.About the Food CompaniesLivsmedelsföretagen is an industry and employer organization for everyone who produces food and drink in Sweden.
