So begins the success story of the small company in Rogaland, Norway, which became the world’s fastest growing company in warehouse logistics. – The revolution has only just begun. With our innovative power, we will continue to lead it, says Carlos Fernández, Chief Product Officer at AutoStore. The year is 1995 and a small company in the town of Nedre Vats is thinking about how they can increase their stock of computer products. Without a budget. Technical manager Ingvar Hognaland then utters the classic quote: “We must get rid of the air in the warehouse”. This will be the starting point for a whole new way of thinking about layers – stacking boxes on top of each other according to the same principle as Rubrik’s cube! Every centimeter and second makes a difference– It turned out that the solution to our own storage problem suited many other companies with similar challenges, says Carlos Fernández. AutoStore’s patented storage system is based on a grid of boxes where cubes of goods are stacked very tightly.¬¬ From floor to ceiling, from wall to wall . The handling is carried out by robots. – What it’s about is making use of every centimeter and every second. Speed, safety and precision are what customers demand. As well as lower costs for warehouse space and labour, Carlos continues.Success formulaAutoStore does not have its own warehouses, but the system is provided by third parties. Today there are more than 950 systems in Europe, North America and Asia. All with tailored adjustments to suit the specific business. Food, retail, medical and health care are some of the industries. – We provide the technology, others take care of the actual conduct. This is what created our success. And we continue the development, says Carlos. Innovative powerAutomated inventory management is just in its infancy. Only 15 percent of the world’s warehouses are currently automated, so the potential is enormous. – The revolution has only just begun, Carlos continues. Just look at e-commerce, which is growing like an avalanche. Today, both companies and consumers expect everything to go lightning fast, from order to delivery.New buying behavioursAnother trend is micro fullfilment – that stores keep small, very compact warehouses locally, where you can fit the goods that are in demand at low cost. In this way, the customer can receive his product immediately. Carlos believes that consumption patterns are changing. – Sometimes you prefer to order your item online and pick it up in a nearby store. Sometimes it is better to try and feel the product in the store and then order it online. AutoStore makes this possible. The demand for efficient automation processes is something that is generally increasing, says Carlos. – The warehouse of the future does not follow office hours. They will be up and running 24/7. sustainabilityPerhaps the most important is the sustainability aspect. Small, efficient warehouses require less heating and have a smaller climate footprint, the robots do not pull more than a washing machine and do not need light to work. Solar energy and systems to use the energy generated by the robots make the facilities circular. Innovative powerCarlos thinks it’s an exciting time AutoStore is facing. – Cube thinking and the pioneering red line robot and black line robot are examples of the innovative power we have in our blood, at all levels in the company. And there is a short path between research results and practical solutions. At heart, we are still a small company from Nedre Vats! About AutoStore:AutoStore was founded in 1996 and has developed the world’s most space-efficient warehouse solution – Cube Storage Automation. By combining software, hardware and knowledge, the company creates the warehouse of the future. AutoStore has more than 950 systems in over 45 countries in many different industries. All sales are designed, installed and serviced by a network of qualified system integrators – “partners.” The company’s headquarters are located in Nedre Vats (Norway).
