Faster and safer future with 5G
Published: 17 May 2022, 10:29 Updated: 20 May 2022, 09:42Faster, safer and more efficient. The fifth generation mobile network, 5G, can not only offer companies tailor-made and faster solutions than today. It can also increase safety and production.Read more: Six experts answer questions about 5G. To some extent, 5G is based on the same technology as its predecessor 4G, which among other things made it possible to stream video and to easily download apps. – 5G will also enable a lot of new types of experiences for users. In addition, it will change a lot for companies. 5G can transfer data with much less delay than 4G and will be able to support many more devices. It was also developed to offer better support for private networks, says Scott M. Lawrence, director of telecommunications giant Verizon.
Exclusive access to the network
Private 5G networks in particular are predicted to revolutionize the use of mobile networks. With a private 5G network, the company has exclusive access to the network that operates on that frequency. This is a difference from, for example, wifi, where everyone uses one of two frequencies – which can lead to congestion or interference. The business benefits of 5G networks are many. One is that companies can build a network based on the needs of their applications. They can decide for themselves what performance they want. It also means that the network is secure. The owner has full control over who can access it.The last piece of the puzzle is so-called edge computing. It can be used for an application based on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to analyze videos from, for example, a manufacturing process. Being able to quickly detect a problem and take immediate action can be crucial. A concrete example is the opportunity to improve the working environment and safety. The speed of many auto-steered vehicles (AGVs) is currently limited to minimize the risk of accidents. With the reliability that a private 5G offers in almost real time, it will be possible to increase the speed and thus also the productivity. Tests with sensors on vehicles and AI / ML to detect possible hazards and take measures to avoid incidents have shown that five-fold increases can be possible without compromising safety. – Video surveillance can also help improve safety, but it has so far been limited by that someone must actively watch the movies. It can be unrealistic in a large workplace with many potential dangers. Instead, incidents have been investigated afterwards. With private 5G, video can be transferred to an on-site server in milliseconds, automatically analyzed and report deviations in time to prevent accidents, says Scott M. Lawrence.
Verizon Communications Inc. was founded in 2000 and is one of the world’s leading providers of technology and communications services. Headquartered in New York City and with a worldwide presence, Verizon generated revenues of over $ 133 billion by 2021. The company offers voice, data and video services and solutions on its award-winning networks and platforms. Verizon was the first company in the world to launch commercial 5G for mobility, fixed wireless and mobile “edge computing”. The business is aimed at both consumers and companies.
May prevent serious injury
5G has been tested on oil rigs to ensure that people use the right protective equipment. For example, if an employee takes off one of his protective gloves, the machine he is working on can be stopped automatically, which can prevent serious injuries. In the medical world, the same technology is used to guide employees when putting on advanced protective equipment. An AI / ML-driven assistant can provide guidance in almost real-time and confirm that each step has been completed correctly. The same technology can also be applied in an environment where complex equipment is installed. Instead of quality assurance taking place after assembly, it can be integrated throughout production. If an operator should miss a step or make an incorrect connection, they are warned and an error is prevented. These are just a few examples of how private 5G and edge computing can help improve security. There are many, many more. – The possibilities are practically unlimited. From mining to healthcare, manufacturing to retail, companies are discovering that private 5G can help them solve problems that were previously difficult to solve, says Scott M. Lawrence. Hundreds of millions of people already have 5G coverage and that number is growing rapidly. With private 5G, you do not even have to wait for mobile operators to expand their networks; as long as the spectrum is available, you can choose the time yourself.
