At the forefront of the investment is Piteå, where several environmental investments have already been implemented or are planned. Constantly developing sustainability work has long been a matter of course in Piteå. Investments in, among other things, wind power have put the city on the world map when it comes to renewable energy, and more in environmental technology is to be expected. – The green wave of industrialization has brought more people to Norrland – and thus created a need for more housing. That is why an urban development project is now underway in an area just east of the city center: a beautiful location with the forest and the water around the corner. There are fantastic opportunities for a good quality of life, says Jan Johansson, head of community construction at Piteå municipality. The goal is to develop a new attractive area with mixed housing where citizens have walking and cycling distance to Piteå center. When the area is completed in 2030, it will provide space ate about 600 homes for 1,000–1,400 inhabitants. The focus of the project is to make it easy for Piteå residents to live sustainably.Read more about Urban Development East and our projects– The area will be characterized by social cohesion, participation and promote the idea that everyone can contribute to a sustainable future. Only by settling east of the city center has a major step been taken towards a sustainable lifestyle, as the residential area is built with a mindset of reduced environmental and climate impact. We call the concept “smart city”, says Jan Johansson. Right now the development of the project’s sustainability aspect is underway and Piteå municipality is in full swing to define what the concept smart city means, as it is relatively new in northern Sweden. Something that is not open to discussion is the goal: to contribute to the goals of Agenda 2030 and the global goals for sustainable development. – In connection with our growth as a region, we want to become a leader in sustainability issues and attractiveness. We find ways to live our lives fully but climate neutral. To do this, we collaborate with various startups, contractors and construction companies. Together, we create opportunities for everything from recycling to smart energy solutions. Our district heating production consists of 99 percent of residual heat from industry, we have a built-up IoT network and well-developed infrastructure in general, which makes it easy to contribute to a sustainable future, says Jan Johansson.
