Guy's Hospital Mad house

Guys Mad house 1827

This detail of Greenwood's 1827 map of London shows Guy's Mad House which appears to be a panopticon.

The idea of a panopticon was devised by Jeremy Bentham in 1791 (see here). It allowed a small number of staff to supervise several wards.

By the late 19th Century the Mad House had been converted into wards and student rooms
